Lodge Pro-Logic P14W3 Cast Iron Wok Review

I must admit, the Lodge P14W3 cast iron wok was mostly an impulse purchase. My faithful and trusty Lodge L8SK3 cast iron skillet has been doing an admirable job of filling in as a wok on my Kamado Joe grill.

But, I saw it on Amazon with free shipping. As the saying goes, the rest is history.

I am a big grilling fanatic, any chance I can get out and grill or smoke something, I will!!

At first, I was a bit concerned that it would be too big to fit on the grill, — so for all of you Google searchers, yes, the Lodge P14W3 cast iron wok will fit on your Kamado Joe Classic.

I poured over hundreds of Amazon reviews on this product before purchasing. With a 4.7 out of 5 stars average, I wasn’t too concerned. With this many reviews, I was certain it was another excellent Lodge cast iron product.

Product Quality and Features

Like all Lodge cast iron products, the wok is out of the box seasoned and ready for action, — that is after a quick clean and coat of cooking oil. You know the usual and routine things you do with your own cast iron cookware.

Looking over Lodge P14W3 cast iron wok, it has the typical Lodge finish, so no surprises here. No, it is not glass smooth like the typical steel wok.

There is no need for a cradle to hold this cast iron wok; it has a nice stable flat flat base that will sit right on your stove-top or grill grate.

Product Test

The day it came, I had prepared an assortment of cut up and some left over veggies from the fridge, — you know, broccoli, carrots, and a red pepper. I fired up our propane grill, added a scoop of coconut oil, and soon had the cast iron wok at my desired temperature.

I added the veggies and in what seemed like only a few seconds of wokking, they were just cooked to the point I like, — cooked with just a bit of veggie crunch remaining. Yum!

Cleanup was a breeze. Yes, I was happy with this purchase!

For dinner, we fired up our Kamado Joe to see how the cast iron wok performed compared to using our Lodge L8SK3 10 inch cast iron skillet. After we got the wok to temperature, we cooked up another batch of veggies and added some thinly sliced beef. Yum, everything just tastes better when cooked outdoors.

Yes, the cast iron wok worked beautifully, sorry skillet, we still love you!

Cleanup was as expected with a new piece of cast iron cookware. It cleaned right up. It will take a number of uses to fully develop that nonstick finish.

Any Downside

Well, this is a cast iron wok, so there is some weight to it, close to 12 pounds. Some folks may not like that? With this wok, the weight is really a feature. There wasn’t a need to hold onto the wok handles while cooking and stirring the veggies and meat.

The cast iron gets hot, that is no secret, but some Amazon reviewers seemed surprised!? Just make sure you let get cool enough to handle and you have your heavy leather gloves or a good oven mitt.

Make sure you do your cast iron cookware homework! Learn how to cook in it, learn how to clean it, and learn about seasoning it, and you to will become a cast iron addict!

Lodge P14W3 Cast Iron Wok Accessories

A good pair of leather gloves is a must-have for cast iron cooking.

These NoCry heat resistant gloves are a must-have accessory when using the Lodge P14W3 cast iron wok outdoors on your grill.

We recently picked a pair of these NoCry heat resistant welding gloves to replace our well-used Lodge outdoor cooking gloves.

These welding gloves have over 200 Amazon customer reviews with a 4.5 out of 5 stars rating. With that kind of feedback, it’s no doubt a quality product. They even have an Amazon Choice recommendation. These Amazon recommendations are for highly rated, well-priced products available to ship immediately.

Of course, a couple of decent oven mitts would probably work. In our experience, using cast iron on the grill causes the “good stuff” to discolor. For domestic tranquility, I’ll stick with using these multi-tasker gloves for my grilling and fire pit cooking.

December 16, 2018 Update

This Lodge 14 inch cast iron wok continues to impress. After two years of use, like all cast iron, it just gets better with age.

Similarly, some important tidbits we have learned.

Using a heavy cast iron is very different from traditional thin and lightweight wok.

The most important factor to consider is that a thin wok transfers its heat directly to the food, requiring a very high source of heat, while a thick, heavy iron wok retains its heat, absorbing it from the heat source and building its temperature higher and higher.

If you let this cast iron wok sit on the heat source too long, it will become too hot for decent frying.

Temperature control is key.

This is Our Method for a Cast Iron Stir-fry

1) Sear the meat
●   heat the wok until a drop of water on the inside surface sizzles and dissolves in about two seconds
●   add oil and sear your meat or scramble the eggs. Remove from wok
2) Heat spices
●   add oil (second time), wait a minute, and stir-fry seasonings
●   then, add and stir-fry rice or noodles. Add eggs and combine. Remove from wok
3) Stir-fry vegetables
●   add oil (third time), wait a minute, then fry more seasoning for the vegetables
●   then, add vegetables in order of their cooking time: tough or raw vegetables first, then medium, then soft vegetables and mushrooms
4) Mix together
●   add oil (last time), and add fried rice around the sides of the wok, with the vegetables in the center.
●   then, add the meat to vegetables and rice then finish cooking.
5) Finally, add sauces
